The Pyrenees are one of the most important mountains of Europe, giving home to many unique species of animals and plants that are of huge international importance.
At the same time, the local human communities have a very diverse ethnic, cultural and economic heritage.
However, the Pyrenees area have been suffering from a wide range of serious environmental and human-related problems in the modern times:
- deminishing of population of small villages owing to the phenomenon that the young generations are transiting to bigger towns and cities
- as a consequence, abandonment of economic activities related to nature such as farming and agriculture, peasantry in general
- aging of the population without regeneration, owing to the abandonment of lands, houses and villages
- loss and impoverishment of unique cultures
- deterioration of natural elements such as meadows and pastures middle mountain among others
- new forms of mass tourism e.g. those related to winter sports (ski resorts), that are hard to be managed in an ecolologically sustainable way
- disappearance of species of animals and plants alike (this latter is also related to the interests of medicine and pharmacology industry)
One of the priorities of Project Pyrenees is to diversify the productive economy in order to offer alternatives to young people, or to enforce peasantry in general, to be able to anchor and strengthen local population in the Pyrenees. We encourage it by promoting agroecological and industrial practices alike – in general, by promoting a clean industry with respect of the region and traditional activities.
Other types of action are directed towards different animal and plant species that are in danger of extinction and towards valuable natural environments of the Pyrenees. We encourage proper custody of territories by offering various forms of cooperation between private or public owners and our organization, also enforcing the sustainable management of these lands.
